Bali
Equal Health helped bring sight to those who couldn't see, with a joint project between Equal Health and the John Fawcett Foundation, which saw the establishment of an optical laboratory at an Eye Hospital in Denpasar, Bali in 2001.
Australian wholesalers and retailers donated equipment for the laboratory and Equal Health volunteers provided training for local opticians. Equal Health volunteers visited the laboratory on a regular basis to provide:
- Support and follow-up training.
- Free of charge supply of spectacles to underprivileged people.
- Ongoing skills development.
- Facilitation of an exchange program to provide on the job training for local Balinese opticians in Australia. This was made possible by the partnership between the John Fawcett Foundation and Perth based optometry practice Vision West.
This project is now self sufficient and sustainable, and no longer requires the support of Equal Health.
